A woman with a small round face, framed behind dark spectacles, softly told me the story of how she had come to live behind the walls of the Eddie Warrior Correctional Center.
“I thought I had to be married to get out from under my mom,” Sherry Cummings told me.
The oldest of eight children, Sherry married at 14 and traveled the country with her husband. The couple journeyed to New Mexico, Colorado, California, Florida, and a few places in between.
The independence she found traveling with her first husband was a welcome change from living at home with her mother, helping raise the seven other children.
At age 16, Sherry left her first husband for a man she called “Dr. Jekyll versus Mr. Hyde,” a man she described as abusive, controlling, and paranoid.
“He slept with a .38 under his pillow every single night. If I had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I’d have to wake him up and ask him.”
Sherry depicted her relationship with Dr. Jekyll as abusive in every possible way: physically, verbally, emotionally, mentally, and sexually.
“You’re so scared, but then you just get numb. I learned to accept it, and gave up on life.”
Sherry never stood up for herself, but over time she learned to take the beatings, and pick herself up after every blow.
“I would take it until he was tired,” she said.
Jessie told her what to do, what to say, what to think, and when to think it. Jessie controlled Sherry’s life.
On September 5, 1991, Sherry’s husband, Jessie James Cummings, and his other wife, Juanita Cummings, were directly involved in the murder of Jessie’s sister Judy, and his niece Melissa.
Sherry Cummings was convicted of two counts of Accessory to Murder After the Fact, and one count of Permitting Child Abuse.
She was incarcerated in 1994 at Oklahoma City’s Old Mable Bassatt, then moved to a private prison in Odessa, Texas, then McCloud prison, then in June of 2005, she was transferred to Eddie Warrior.
Even after years of abuse, and years of incarceration, Sherry still has ambition and a surprising sort of spirit in her demeanor. She said time has given her the opportunity to look inside herself and re-evaluate who she is.
In all of her resilience, Sherry has not become a casualty of the abuse she endured. Sherry now accepts herself, and is happy with who she is.
“I have no marks that anyone can see," she said. "All my marks are on the inside.”

I've read all the stories posted and watched the video interview. I'm surprised at how many of the women have a positive outlook and hope for their future. Given the statistics, it seems each person cannot beat the odds and stay out of prison, yet that is what each one says they are determined to do. It must be a survival instinct to have this determination. To admit the odds would be self-defeating.
I'm also surprised how little personal responsibility the inmates take for their crimes. Many speak of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or needing money and not being able to get it honestly, or being controlled by others. In effect, they absolve themselves of the guilt for their crimes by justifying the circumstances that led them. In my opinion, this attitude or belief about oneself would prevent true change that would be required to adhere to the determination for a new life.
It is an interesting project. I'd like to see follow-up interviews of the ones who were being released or had parole hearings in the short time that followed these original interviews.
I feel real sorrow for Sherry Cummings, I feel for her I was also a battered wife twice although I never over stepped the mark to murder but I grew with hatred in my heart and it is still there, I also came from an abusive family. I have just finished reading the book 'Suffer the little children' I found it horrific and one thing that pops into my head alot is why couldn't Juanita shoot Jesse when he walked through the door. I would like to write Sherry I think she needs a pal I also think they both admitted what they did in this crime if it wasn't for Juanita no-one would've solved those murders.
I just got done ready the book "suffer the children" and I want to add that it was torture what them ladies went threw!!I think that they should be released , they have served enough time!!They lived in Hell for years, imagine your child being beat within an inch of there lives to keep you from leaving, or to make you do something, I think any mother would do it!!I would have, if I could not escape, I would of done anything he said just so he would leave my child alone!!I feel for you Sherry, you and Anita!!Thank the lord the man responsible for all this is Dead and gone he got his justice!!and I feel that justice has been served, set the ladies free!!!
I have read the book that was written about them and it is awful the way that so called human treated them Juanita was told that if she didnt do what she was told to do he would kill her son and if she did something wrong he would beat the child for punishment and told her that if she touched him she would get the same thing
Hi my name is Shalynn Maltbie. Will be Shalynn Yaws when I get married in June of 2012. The book Suffer the Little Children is very interesting but there is some lies and things left out in that book. I want you guys to know Sherry is out and has been out since 2010. She now lives in Oklahoma and has a relationship with her daughter and grandkids. She has reconnected with some of her brothers and sister and mom. They are all building a relationship. I am not sure what is going on with Juanita but only time will tell. The kids in the book are all doing good.
I was actually at McCloud with Sherry in Theraputic Community and I am so glad to hear she is doing well and has been released.
I fully understand wanting to protect your child. I do not understand how one is able , however, to absolve oneself of guilt for complicity. I could never. I also believe it is impossible for anyone who resided in that sick piece of human excrement's presence to escape unscathed. That is a contributory factor in raising additional generations of abusers.
Hey, nobody can possibly understand how things happen unless you're there, and you're in their exact position, and it is you. Sometimes things happen before you can really even wrap your mind around it, and then it's too late to turn back. So you carry on in the hell that is your life, do the best you think you can do to protect your children, not realizing that you're actually hurting them as well as yourself. When a creep like that keeps you believing you're nothing but garbage, and no one coming to your aid so far, you do believe you have no choice. Some people are just stronger in one way or weaker, and you really can't know in a situation like this what someone shoulda, coulda, done. It's such a shame, but it's too late for that little girl and her mother, who trusted her brother to help her out. When I heard that bastard whine about how innocent he was at his death it made me sick. At least these women admit what they did and have remorse. I think it's pretty safe to say they would never have done anything like that if not for him,, and wouldn't again. They've done enough time. Some rapists do less time. And killers in the past.
Nopedy, nope, nope, nope.
Sherry Cummings is not the victim she would like everyone to believe she is (or was.) I've read ALL the court documents related to her trial and conviction. She was just as morally and ethically culpable for the murders as Jesse and Anita were - perhaps more so, since she was the "dominant personality" in the household. She was also violent and duplicitous, as shown by the facts.
So a young person connected to a group with an inherent bias walks in and interviews Sherry. Well, OF COURSE she's going to make herself out to be a victim - DUH. And the kid swallows the story whole. Meanwhile, Sherry is patting herself on the back for manipulating a naive kid. She's a disgusting human being and I feel terribly sorry for anyone who gets involved with her.
I am the wife of a child concieved by Jesse and MH Yaws. I would like to get more information on the other children that are his siblings. And more information about Jesse himself. After reading this book myself, I seen similarities between Jesse and my husband. Manipulating single mothers until they sign the marriage license. Not just the looks. Anyone that can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it as well as information about my late mother n law who we named our daughter after.
Amen to that! I agree. I actually know Juanita from back when she was a 16 year old child she was a very kind hearted and loving individual. It could have only been the hatred and the Demonic ways of that man that could cause her to do something like this! SET THEM FREE!

they should get the needle just like jess did
both women are should get the needle just like jessie did, jess was a very loving man.i got to be with him in the last 5years of his life
Amen!!
Juanita is still incarcerated and has been denied parole several times.
If these ladies really wanted to leave after KNOWING what he was capable, they would have! I am a mother and went through horrible things, not as bad as this situation, and I took both of my children and had nothing!! I was emotionally weak and scarred but it's not about being too weak to leave, it's called survival! I am sorry I don't have sympathy for these ladies, they BOTH should serve life. He was 100 miles away when he barked out his sick orders! The three of those women and kids would have been out the door in a New York minute had I been Sherry or Juanita. I don't buy it for a second.
I agree with you. They could have saved them as well as each other that day. They wanted to to make sure their children lived but was fine with Melissa being murdered. They both should have received life with no parole.
After reading all of the court documents and research on Murderpedia, I think that Anita killed Judy as a result of a fight over Judy sticking Anita with Melissa. Jesse had no reason to kill his sister and no motive is ever discussed. There is no evidence that he sexually abused children although the entire extended family was rampant with child sexual abuse. In the initial police interviews there was no mention of rape, and Sherry never agreed with Anita that a rape of Melissa took place. After Anita fought and then shot Judy, Sherry and/or Anita had to get ride of Melissa. They cleaned up before Jesse got back from the hospital. Both woman had vehicles, both had access to the joint checking account, and both were involved in a sexual, romantic relationship with each other. They could have taken their children and went to another family member's home. They set Jesse up. He was borderline mentally retarded and uneducated.
I also wonder why Juanita didn't shoot Jesse as he walked through the door. I have read the book, and from what I understand, the women felt like Jesse couldn't be killed, as they've seen him get severely injured and walk away like nothing happened.
What are the lies and things left out in the book?
Both women take full responsibility for their parts in everything that happened.
If she was such a dominant personality in the household, why did she reject Jesse when he wanted her to kill Jesse? There is almost nothing in the book about her being violent.
Mildred? Is this you?
Actually, he ordered Judy killed while he was still at home. He left so that he would have an alibi.
Jesse was smarter than you think. He was emotionally, mentally and sexually abusive. He was smart enough to get away with everything. If Anita hadn't confessed, none of them would have been arrested, and the women and children probably would have been dead by now at the hands of Jesse. Jesse had them all afraid for their lives. Even after being locked up, they were petrified that he would find them and kill them, because that's what he repeatedly told them.
